A few years ago, I found myself awake at 3 a.m., racing to finish a creative project before a deadline. My fuel of choice was the 3 C’s: chocolate, chips, and caffeine. This was not a sustainable way to create.

The Creative Habits Nobody Talks About

Artists, writers, illustrators, designers, and other creative people spend a lot of time learning their craft.

We study composition. We learn storytelling. We practice perspective, color theory, character development, and marketing. We attend conferences, watch tutorials, and read books about creativity. What we do not always learn is how to take care of ourselves while doing all that work.

Creativity Requires Energy

For years, I thought creativity was mostly about inspiration and discipline. Now I think energy deserves a seat at the table, too.

Creative work asks a lot of our brains. Whether we are drafting a manuscript, illustrating a picture book, editing a portfolio, or preparing for an exhibition, we need focus, concentration, and mental stamina. When we are hungry, dehydrated, exhausted, or running on sugar alone, everything becomes harder.

Why I Started Snacks & Sketches

I started Snacks & Sketches because I wanted a place to explore the connection between creativity and self-care.

As an author-illustrator, educator, and creative professional, I know how easy it is to prioritize the work and ignore the person doing the work. This blog is my attempt to do better and an accountability tool.

What You’ll Find Here

At Snacks & Sketches, I’ll be sharing practical ideas that help support a creative life. The goal is not to become the healthiest person on the internet. That is not even in the realm of possibility of desire. The goal is to have enough energy, focus, and resilience to keep creating the work that matters to us.

I am excited to learn alongside you.

take Care,
Natasha
